A worm gear system consists of a worm and worm wheel. The worm resembles a screw, which fulfills with a worm wheel, as proven in the picture. When worm and wheel steering gear rotational power can be applied to the worm, it rotates against the wheel and transfers power to the worm wheel. The system is designed so that the worm can simply turn the gear, but the gear cannot change the worm. In a few designs, the friction between the gear and worm keeps the worm set up. This feature can be quite useful in a few applications.
Worm gears are the most compact kind of system and offer high-ratio speed reduction. They are often the preferred kind of gearing system when space is limited and large equipment reductions are required. Worm gears can be used to either greatly boost torque or greatly reduce speed. They are also the smoothest and quietest of 
the apparatus systems, provided that they are correctly mounted and lubricated.
